Michael Ian BlackI was recently referred to a piece in the New York Times written by children’s author (and comedian, actor, aspiring Rabbi) Michael Ian Black. Black has written numerous children’s books, some of which are very good. The rest are great. See our recent review of the classic Buy Two! picture book Chicken Cheeks. Also see your library for The Purple Kangaroo (illustrated by OtLS favorite Peter Brown), A Pig Parade is a Terrible Idea, I’m Bored, and the upcoming Naked! (you’ll have to wait until the summer of 2014 for that one). Black reflects on the idea that children’s books may not need to tell kids the they ‘are special,’ – a concept that might be shocking to many picture book writers and publishers. He also reviews three books that he has recently enjoyed:

  • Snippet the Early Riser written & illustrated by Bethanie Murguia
  • Exclamation Mark by Amy Krouse Rosenthal & illustrated by Tom Lichtenheld
  • Cookie, the Walker written & illustrated by Chris Monroe

Check out Michael Ian Black’s entire piece from Sunday March 8th 2013’s New York Times here.
