International Book Giving Day 2013… is today!!! (I knew February 14th was some special day, I just couldn’t remember why – I’ll have to tell Mama Funk how much I love … giving books).

This volunteer initiaitive was created to increase children’s access to (and enthusiasm for) books. Worldwide, on February 14th, people will be giving away book. The International Book Giving Day team encourages you to give books in one of three ways:

  1. Give a book to a friend or family member
  2. Leave a book in a waiting room for children to read
  3. Donate a gently used book to a library, hospital, shelter, or organization that distributes books to children in need (especially internationally)

Check out the International Book Giving Day website for more ideas, as well as numerous printable book plates, ways you yourself can help organize, and more information about IBG Day. Three staggering facts (I pulled directly from the IBG Day Site):

  • Most children in developing countries do not own books.
  • In the United Kingdom, one-third of children do not own books.
  • In the United States, two-thirds of children living in poverty do not own books.

I just gave a set of Diaper David books (from OtLS favorite David Shannon) to a friend whose wife had twin boys last month. Who are you going to give a book to?

Borrow. Read. Return. Repeat.
