Accio Books! For the fifth consecutive year, the Harry Potter Alliance is running it’s annual April Book Drive, Accio Books! Over the first four years, 86,000+ books have been donated to underprivileged or underserved readers through the program. In 2013, the HP Alliance is helping to raise books in support of Read Indeed, a non-profit literacy organization started by an 8-year-old girl (crazy, right?!?) whose goal is to collect and distribute 1 million books to needy kids by the time she’s 18. Maria Keller (the girl) is currently in 7th grade and has already crossed the 800,000 book threshold. Click here to see the guidelines listed by the HP Alliance regarding how to participate.

As it’s already well into the April drive, it may be too late to organize a large scale donation event. There are still some good options, however. You can gather any books you’d like to donate from around your home and mail them directly to Read Indeed (see the guidelines page). Or, just donate the books after April (I hear people still like reading in May, as well as some of the other months).

And lastly, when you donate books, you can get House Points. 10 points per book donated and 15 points per Harry Potter book donated. Hufflepuff has won the last two House Cups, but as of the time that I’m writing this, Ravenclaw has a pretty healthy lead. For some reason, no one from Slytherin has donated a book yet….
