Just a refresher: The Randolph Caldecott Medal is given to the artist of the most distinguished American picture book for children in the previous year (2013’s award is given to a book published in 2012). It is named in honor of the 19th century English illustrator (Randolph Caldecott) and is awarded annually by the Association for Library Services to Children (a division of the American Library Association).
