Ducks Don't Wear SocksI sort of cheated when grabbing this book. I went to the row that had ‘recently returned’ picture books that hadn’t yet been reshelved. That doesn’t necessarily guarantee that the book will be any good, just that it was recently taken out by someone. In this case, Ducks Don’t Wear Socks by John Nedwidek was pretty entertaining. It was a quick five-minute read, with a couple of sweet and silly characters, a heartfelt message, and a satisfying ending.

Ducks Don’t Wear Socks is rated Check It Out!

Emily (a very serious girl) and Duck (a very not serious duck) keep crossing paths, day after day. Each day, Duck does something very un-ducklike (wearing socks, a hat, carrying a brief case, etc.). Slowly, Emily becomes less serious, until she eventually becomes as very not serious as Duck. This is a book about opposites attracting and eventually becoming friends. Lee White’s illustration remind me of a ’90s Nickelodeon cartoon, in a pleasingly nostalgic way.
