zen ghostsZen Ghosts, written and illustrated by Jon J Muth is the third in a series of books following children Addy, Michael, and Karl, along with their Panda friend, Stillwater. The first in this series, Zen Shorts, won a Caldecott Honor in 2005, and was followed by Zen Ties in 2008. My favorite of the series is 2010’s Zen Ghosts, the reasons being two-fold: (1) It takes place during Halloween and (2) Stillwater’s tale in the second half of the book gives me shivers every time I read it.

Zen Ghosts is rated Buy It!

Muth’s painting is so delicate and calming, accurately reflecting the tone of the book, something that can often only be accomplished properly by those writers who are able to illustrate their own works. The messages in these books aren’t too preachy, and they certainly make the reader (both parent and child) reflect.

Let’s hope Muth has more Zen to share with us in the near future…
