Picture Book of the Week: The Monstore

| July 5, 2013 1 Comment »

The MonstoreFrom debut picture book author extraordinaire Tara Lazar comes The Monstore. In an effort to rid himself of his annoying little sister, Zack purchases a monster (from The Monstore, of course) to scare her. When the first monster doesn’t appear to work, Zack heads back to The Monstore to return the ineffective beast. To his dismay, returns and exchanges are not allowed. So obviously Zack ends up coming home with not only the original, but a second monster. The cycle continues until this book reaches a humorous and satisfying conclusion with sibling love and a whole house bursting with exciting (and clearly not scary) monsters.

Shelf Lookout: Monster Needs a Costume

| July 3, 2013 3 Comments »

Monster Needs a CostumeRhyming picture book alert!!! This debut picture book from Paul Czajak is the first in the Monster & Me series. In Monster Needs a Costume, as Halloween approaches, Monster needs a costume (of course). But with so many choices, he simply can’t decide. Well, I have deicided that this is a book worth picking up. Monster Needs a Costume will be released about two months prior to Halloween, but just in time for me to help my many many many children figure out what they’d like to dress as on the second best day of the year (the best being whatever day it is today)!

Picture Book of the Week: The Circus Ship

| June 28, 2013 1 Comment »

The Circus ShipI’m on a rhyming picture book kick (this shouldn’t surprise anyone), so this week I’d like to highlight The Circus Ship by Chris Van Dusen (you might recognize his artwork from the Mercy Watson series – or one of the several other rhyming picture books he’s written and illustrated). Although the book was inspired by true story, this fantastical adventure of friendly circus animals surviving a shipwreck is truly sensational. When the animals, who are not anthropomorphic, wash up in a small town in Maine, they are befriended and welcomed by the citizens (what else would you expect from those affable Maine folks?). But when the circus owner comes looking for his property, the citizens and animals work together to fool the pompous proprietor.
