2013 Children's Book Week Poster illustrated by Brian SelznickEvery year since 1919, Children’s Book Week has been celebrated in the United States of America. You’ve probably seen the annual posters hanging in your local library, or possibly even in your own basement. During this week, publishers, authors, booksellers, librarians, and anyone who enjoys children’s books can celebrate. This year, it will run from Monday, May 13th through Sunday May 19th. Check out the Children’s Book Week website here.

One of the cool things about Children’s Book Week, is that you can get a free poster commemorating the event – and all you have to do is pay for postage. This year’s poster was illustrated by Brian Selznick, paying homage to Remy Charlip and Maurice Sendak. Additionally, you can download and print your own copy of 2013’s commemorative bookmark illustrated by Grace Lin here.

I’m not quite sure if this is the 94th or 95th annual edition of the week. The CBW website says 94th, but by my count, it’s the 95th – maybe they skipped a year once? Either way, I agree with the week’s originator (Frederic Melcher) when he declared: “A great nation is a reading nation.”

Currently, Children’s Book Week is administered by Every Child A Reader, the non-profit literacy foundation, and is sponsored by the Children’s Book Council.
